Farmers and chemical users have just a few more days to register their unwanted agvet chemicals for this year’s collection in South Australia.
ChemClear will be travelling around the state collecting unwanted and out-of-date agvet chemicals during the collection in the next couple of months.
As part of the program, waste holders are asked to register their chemicals before the closing date on the 28th March.
The program plans to start the collection in May.
So far, more than eight tonnes of chemicals have been registered for this year’s collection.
Out of that total, five tonnes will be collected for free.
These chemicals are eligible for free disposal because a 4c per litre levy has been applied on the products at the point of sale by manufacturers participating in the program.
The remaining three tonnes of the chemicals registered are from unknown and historic manufacturers or companies not participating in the ChemClear and drumMUSTER stewardship programs.
A fee per litre for disposal will be applied to these chemicals as they sit outside the stewardship program.
ChemClear National Program Manager Lisa Nixon said don’t wait to register your chemicals for the upcoming collection.
“Registrations are essential as it is a legal requirement to know what we’re collecting, carting and disposing of when we hit the road in May,” she said.
“Every year I see people missing out on collections because they didn’t register in time.
“We visit every state and territory in Australia on a cycle program, so it may be a couple of years before we undertake another state collection in South Australia.
“The ChemClear program is a vital service for chemical users needing to meet quality assurance and environmental management systems and for those just wanting to do the right thing and dispose of their chemicals safely and environmentally.”
Ninety eight per cent of the chemical collected is used as an alternative fuel source in the manufacturing of cement.
Most of the material is destroyed in kilns which reach temperatures in excess of 1800°C.
